Usually, the amount of experience points required to level up, and/or the difficulty in obtaining experience points, is higher for higher levels than lower ones, so players who simply repeatedly defeat low level enemies or complete the same quest over and over don't end up increasing in power incredibly, thus encouraging players to continue the main storyline of the game to continue gaining strength. When enough experience points are obtained, the character will increase in level by at least one, or "level up", which usually increases the stats of the character in some fashion, and may also add new functionality to the character, such as new skills, or abilities.
